Letter written by Lorene Carey Russell, copied from his funeral notice: W.A. Carey, 83 yrs old. He lived in Paris, TX until 11 yrs before he died. He moved then to Madill, OK.
Although not ordained, family tradition says that he was a minister, perhaps pressed into religions service because of later circumstances and his own inclination...a respected man of unquestioned honesty.
Knob region of south central KY, was in Lincoln Co., then became Casey Co., 1806...scenic but not fertile area. Adam, Conrad and John moved to KY after the Rev. War. Founded Carpenters Station, established 1780.
1870 igi LDS census file listed 1870 household: James F, Alethia, George; census 1870 listed in Ancestry.com listed the family unit as James F, Alethia, John J(b.~1867) and Nancy J (b.~1850)
1860 census also lists her state of birth as KY. They always appeared in Lincoln Co., KY; and as adults, near Letha's Carpenter family.

According to local Hustonville historian, A. Leach, Conrad was either murdered or died near Louisville, and his coffin shipped back to the Hustonville area. Apparently Priscilla died not too long after and all of the kids disappeared (to various family members?). Eventually some of them returned. Mr. Leach said that Conrad had a reputation of being "a rough character."
He was a surveyor, rugged outdoorsman and early KY explorer, and was "Long Hunter", a band of about 20 men who went into KY area early fall 1769 to trap, hunt and explore. Second trip again 1776 where he built a cabin, cleared a field and raised corn. Apparently he lived his life as a bachelor. Most of the time he signed his name as "Coonrod."
