- The Commonwealth War Graves Commission does not record that this man had been awarded the Military Medal. This was confirmed in the 'London Gazette' of 18th July 1917.
L/Sgt. Walter Kirk, M.M., [1] 2nd Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, was killed in action on 23rd March 1918. He is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
“KIRK. – Sergt. Walter Kirk, M.M., 2nd Sherwoods, reported missing March 21st, [sic] 1918, now reported killed, aged 21 years. Gone, but not forgotten. – From mother and father, 84 Robin Hood-street.†[2]
The citation for his M.M. reads:
“For devotion to duty on 27th/28th [3] May 1917, (Exeter Castle), in a raid on the Hair Pin Craters, he showed great bravery throughout, having entered the crater he led his men to the further objective. On returning to our lines he discovered that his officer [4] had been knocked down by a “Minnie†he immediately volunteered to go out and look for him. This he did, remaining in the enemy trenches even after our artillery had ceased to fire.†[5]
The former printer's apprentice was the son of Frank and Louisa Kirk.

[3] The war diary states the raid took place at 0500 on 28th May 1917.
[4] Second Lieutenant Eric Cyril Cousins, 13th attached 2nd Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment. He was killed in action on 21st March 1918. Commemorated on the Arras Memorial, he was the son of Thomas and Alice Cousins, of 'Montpelier,' Mapperley Plains, Nottingham.
