      Joseph E. "Joe" O'Connor, 77, Wenatchee, died Monday, Nov. 18, 1996, at Central Washington Hospital.

      He was born on Feb. 9, 1919, in Portland, Ore. He moved to Okanogan at the age of 14. He was adopted by William and Hattie O'Connor. He attended school in Okanogan and graduated from Okanogan High School in 1939. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II as a construction equipment operator.

      He married Mary Pauline "Polly" Greene on April 4, 1940, in Omak. They moved to Wenatchee in 1952, where he has since lived. His wife preceded him in death in 1981. He later married Vicki Berkley on June 21, 1981, in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

      Mr. O'Connor worked for Alcoa for 30 years as a furnace caster. After his retirement in 1982, he worked for Harrison Auto Parts as a delivery man for five years. He also was a greeter for more than a year at Wal-Mart and was known by the children as the "Candy Man."

      He was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church; Wenatchee Valley Antique Car Club; AFL-CIO Aluminum Workers Local; and Bee Hive Grange. He enjoyed collecting antiques and old cars.

      Survivors include his wife, Vicki O'Connor of Wenatchee; his daughters, Mrs. Ronald (Susan G.) Snelson of Wenatchee, Margaret Evenson of Kent and Lori Young of Spokane; his sons, Michael O'Connor of East Wenatchee, Patrick O'Connor of Spokane, Timothy O'Connor of Osan, Korea, and Rich McVeigh of East Wenatchee; 22 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a stepbrother, Henry Walker of Spokane; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his wife, Polly, he was preceded in death by his biological parents, his adoptive parents and several brothers.
