    Æthelred sent Emma and her children to her brother Richard II, in Normandy to escape a pending invasion by Sweyn in 1013, he soon fled before Sweyn and joined his family.

    Æthelred and Emma returned to England after Sweyn's death in 1014 at the request of the English nobles.

    Emma's son Harthacnut succeeded Cnut as king in both England and Denmark, however the situation in Denmark required he remain there. In his absence Emma and Earl Godwin ruled England in Harthacnut's name.

    Cnut died 12 November 1035 and Emma was widowed for a 2nd time.
