MY THOUGHTS ON MY GRANDFATHER BY MARV KASSEN..........
IZZY WAS BORN IN RUSSIA AND HAD OTHER BROTHERS AND SISTER . ALL
BROTHERS
AND SISTERS WERE BORN IN RUSSIA WITH THE EXCEPTION HIS BROTHER HARRY
WHO
WAS BORN IN PHILADELPIA,PENNA. HE WAS AN ENTENPNER AND WAS A VERY GOOD
BUSINESSMAN UNFORTUNATLEY HE TENDED TO MAKE MONEY ON THE OTHER SIDE OF
THE LAW, SO I HAVE HEARD. AS I REMEMBER HE WAS A BIG MAN AND ALWAYS
HAD A
CIGAR IN HIS MOUTH. I THINK BECAUSE OF I WILL ALWAYS HATE YARD WORK. I
REMEMBER BACK TO THE YEAR 1946 WHEN WE FIRST MOVE FROM PHILADELPIA TO
A BIG HOUSE IN THEN CALLED NORTH VAN NUYS,CALIFORNIA. THERE WAS A BIG
YARD AND HE HAD JUST HAD A STEEL REEL TYPE LAWN MOWER SHARPEN AND I
HAD
ASKED HIM IF I COULD MOW THE LAWN. OF COURSE I HAVE NEVER AT THAT TIME
EVER MOWED A LAWN MUCH LESS PULLED A WEED,I GREW UP IN PHILADELPIA
WHERE
THEY ONLY HAD CEMENT AND AT THAT TIME I WAS ONLY 8 YEARS OLD. THE
GRASS
WAS ABOUT 5 INCHES LONG AND IT WAS THE KIND OF GRASS CALLED "DEVIL
GRASS". MY GRANDFATHER WHICH I CALL "ZAYDA", SAID SURE GO RIGHT AHEAD
AND
CUT THE GRASS. WELL I STARTED TO PUSH THE MOWER AND THE FIRST FEW FEET
WAS PRETTY EASY, BUT AS I GOT INTO THE DEEPER GRASS IT GO QUIT A BIT
TOUGHER AND I HAD A HARD TIME OF IT, BEING OF SLIGHT BUILD AND SKINNY
I
DID NOT HAVE A LOT OF MUSCLE POWER. SO I SAID TO ZAYDA I QUIT THIS IS
TO
HARD. SO ZAYDA IN HIS INFINITE WISDOM SAYS TO ME MOISHA(MY GIVEN
JEWISH
NAME) MOW THE GRASS AND I SAID IT WAS TO HARD AND WITH THAT HE GAVE ME
A
"KLUP"(YIDDISH WORD FOR BANG) ACROSS THE THE HEAD. AND HE SAID MOW THE
YARD AND NOT WANTING ANY MORE "KLUPPING" I MOWED THE YARD, IT WAS A
LONG
AFTERNOON WITH MY COMPLAINING CAME MORE "KLUPPING" I FINALLY GOT THE
YARD
MOWED. YOU CAN BET YOUR SWEET ASS I NEVER VOLINTEERED THE DO ANYMORE
YARD
AND I ONLY DID IT WHEN I WAS TOLD TO DO IT. HENCE YOU KNOW WHY I DON'T
LIKE YARD WORK. | ZELDIN, Isadore (Aisik) (I764)
